Election Updates - Mugabe says ZEC Doesn’t Rig Elections

Former President Robert Mugabe has disputed opposition claims that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) is compromised and biased towards the ruling Zanu PF party.

The former Zanu PF leader was addressing local and international journalists Sunday ahead of Monday’s elections.

He said he would back opposition MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa but said he did not believe the latter’s claim that national election management body was not independent of the ruling party.

“I don’t think the electoral commission could be captured by anyone no. I don’t believe it,” Mugabe said in response to questions from reporters.
Asked if he was aware of opposition protests against ZEC ahead of Monday’s elections, the 94-year-old played the opposition allegations as political posturing.

“I have just read that in the newspaper, but I thought these were political views being expressed by people who wanted things to be proper,” he said.
